Classic TV Moms We Love

  • Carol Brady

Together The Brady Bunch represented the perfect family. None of that would have been possible without mom - Carol Brady. She was truly head of the household being a stay at home mom she also juggled a lot of hobbies and had a career of her own. Not to mention she also had three girls of her own and then three step kids! Mom award goes to Carol Brady.

  • Morticia Addams

Not only was she a mom, she is a queen! Her husband worships the ground she walks on and Morticia Addams is an overall boss. She ran a very different household, not the usual family - but she always looked flawless! How did she keep her skin looking like porcelain!?

  • Samantha Stephens

Samantha Stephens also represented the classic American family - only one thing. She was a witch. I’m pretty sure most moms can agree that having little extra magic power to get the dishes done and playing tricks on your husband would be very useful.

  • Louise Jefferson

Also known as “Weezy”, Louise Jefferson was another boss mom! Louise Jefferson was a kind-hearted, honest woman who had a hot-headed husband. She gets lots of props from us!

  • Sophia Petrillo

“Blow it out your ditty bag.” Sophia Petrillo is a tell it like it is kind of woman and the best mom to go to when you need some advice. “Picture it, Sicily 1912.” She is hilarious, and another classic mom that we love! Why put mom in a home when you can move her in with you and your best friends!

  • Lucy Ricardo

Calling all New York City Moms! Lots of hard work when you live in a Manhattan apartment, your husband is a musician and you are in training to become a housewife. I Love Lucy gave viewers tons of laughter and still does to this day! Lucy was a caring mother, loyal wife but also managed to get herself into lots of trouble because she is so passionate and determined.

all the single ladies.png

If you find yourself alone on February 14th, it doesn’t mean that you still can’t make the day special and enjoy yourself. Doesn’t matter if you have someone to celebrate the day with. Maybe even one of your other single friends will want to spend time with you. Here are some fun ideas for Valentine’s Day for all the single ladies.

  • Movie marathon featuring your celebrity crush. Which one is yours? Leonardo Dicaprio, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt - Valentine’s Day featuring your star heartthrob.

  • Shopping spree - take the day or night to do some shopping! Get some new makeup or a new outfit to have you feeling great!

  • Do Valentine’s Day gift exchange with your other single friends. Just like Secret Santa - pick a name and surprise them with some flowers and chocolate.

  • Pamper yourself - just call 484-863-4855 and book your spa day! Need your hair did? Add that in too! Nothing says Valentine’s Day like “me time”.

  • Play Tinder roulette. Gather all your single friends and have some fun swiping through Tinder. Maybe you’ll find a date for next year.

  • Laugh it out. Spend the night out at a comedy show or just put on a comedy special on Netflix.

  • Galentine’s Day. Gals night out - do brunch during the day or go out dancing at night.

  • Unplug. If you get annoyed at all the happy couples on social media - unplug, and take the day off from social media. Just put your phone day and focus on you!

  • Do something that your ex-hated. If there was anything you did less of in your last relationship, spend all day doing it! Eat the food you wanted to eat, wear what you wanted to wear.

  • Take a class. Is there a class you’ve been dying to take? Sign up for that class you’ve never been able to get a spot in.

  • Veg out. Netflix and chill have never felt so good when you’re doing it completely alone! Watch what you want and eat all the snacks you want.

  • Go to a museum. Nice, quiet, relaxing and educational.

  • Go on a date. Has there been someone that’s been asking you out lately and you just haven’t had the time? Let someone take you out! Or ask that person out that you’ve been wanting to go out with - chances are they don’t have plans for Valentine’s Day either.

Spray Tan Tips

BY KRISTA C..png

It’s not uncommon leaving a spray tan appointment coming out bright orange - we understand you may be nervous about getting another. Here are some tips to avoid the spray tan disaster.

  • Skip deodorant before the appointment. Deodorant will interfere with the spray tans absorption.

  • The same thing goes with moisturizer - before your appointment.

  • Get your wax or shave the day before your appointment. Hair removal will also remove the tan.

  • Wear loose clothing to your appointment. That way it doesn’t stick or stain your clothing afterward.

  • Avoid showering or going into a pool at least 12 hours after your spray tan.

  • The more you moisturize after your tan - the longer it will last. You can also use tan extender lotions.

  • Spray tan does NOT contain SPH. So it’s still very important to protect your skin from the sun - using your usual sunscreens.

  • After your spray tan, pat dry with a towel instead of rubbing it on your skin. Avoid using loofahs and washcloths for the same reason.

  • Spray tans get darker after application. So if you leave feeling like it’s too light -don’t worry it won’t be for long.

  • Exfoliate before your spray tan. Get rid of all your dead skin so that your tan looks even.

  • DO NOT use scented body washes or lotions after your spray tan. Use fragrance free products.

  • Face washes containing salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide are NOT RECOMMENDED because they can eat away at your spray tan.  Your face will fade faster as you wash it more frequently. Use a gentle cleanser.

  • Wait at least one day before going in the ocean or a pool after your tan.  Chlorine may make your tan fade faster, however it is not going to remove the tan immediately.

How to Find the Right Hairstylist

Getting into a new relationship is an exciting time - especially a new relationship with a new hairstylist that suits you. It’s extremely important that you can trust your hairstylist and have a good connection. Whether you are moving to a new area or going through a hair breakup, here are some tips on how to find the right hairstylist for you.

  • Word of mouth. Ask your friends and coworkers who style their hair. You can always trust someone who has great hair! Make sure to tell your new hairstylist who referred you.

  • Book a blowout. If you're dying to try out a salon but don’t want to make a full commitment yet - book a blowout appointment. You can get a feel and talk to their stylists there for your needs and decide if it’s the best fit. Add in a conditioning treatment as well!

  • Favorite products. Ask around and call salons if you have a favorite professional salon product you like to use. Most of the salon brands have a salon locator on their website to see which salon in your area carries that specific brand.

  • Research. If you’re changing salons - look up the salon on their website, yelp and social media pages. You can see what other happy customers are saying about the salon and about their favorite stylists. Their pages will also forward you to their stylist pages so you can view their work and see if any other the hair colors and cuts interest you.

  • Ask the right questions. Credentials are important and asking the right questions that suit your needs before getting in the chair. Get to know the stylist - what are their strengths, how many years have they been in the profession, what is their passion.

Now, get to choosing the right hairstylist and looking fabulous!

Tips on Keeping Your Fingernails Strong

Do you have thin, brittle nails? Do they crack, take a long time to grow and are dry around the nail area? These are signs of weak, unhealthy nails. Here are some everyday tips to keep your nails strong.

  • Do not cut your cuticles. Your cuticles are protecting your nails from any fungus or bacteria. If you remove the cuticle, you are risking infection. The best thing to do is to lightly push the cuticle back using a cuticle pusher.
  • Stop peeling off your nail polish. This is very damaging to the nail, especially if you are one to peel off the gel polish. Use nail polish remover (without acetone) or properly get the polish removed at the salon.

  • Make time for manicures. Make time for yourself, if you not only want your nails to look good but also stay strong and healthy.

  • Moisturize. Moisturize with your favorite hand cream and cuticle oil after washing your hands. This will definitely help keep away hangnails, soften cuticles and keep your hands and nails moisturized.

  • Wear rubber gloves while doing the dishes. Too much water getting in your nails can cause them to become soft and weak.

  • Keep your nails polished. Even if it’s just a base and top coat. Keeping a polish on your nails will protect them and keep them looking great. Make sure when applying the polish you keep the layers thin.

  • Add more protein into your diet. This will give you more of a boost and you could be experiencing a deficiency, which can cause nails to be brittle.

Why You Should Be In Love With Balayage

Hair by Jo

First, let’s talk about the word, Balayage! What is it? The word itself is French. It means to paint or to sweep. It is a natural looking way to give hair color a softer sun-kissed look to hair. Less is more when creating this natural look. The process itself is when color is applied only to the surface of the hair compared to applying color all the way to the tips in sections. No foil is needed and is done freehanded.

Applying Balayage process takes technique! It should only be done by a trained professional. Your colorist will know and understand your skin tones to pick and choose the best color and application for you.

Hair by Ellen

Now the good stuff. Why you should love it!

  • It’s gained major popularity, from celebrities to the runway, it’s one of the most popular coloring techniques.
  • Works on all hair colors. Light hair or dark hair, Balayage is a beautiful option. Works on all hair types.
  • Low Maintenance. When hair grows out it gives it more a natural look and not that obvious regrowth when you get your entire hair colored. Just use the proper products on your hair and this will last you.
  • Gives your hair a healthy finish that looks naturally enhanced and glossy.

Bottom line, Balayage gives your hair an overall gorgeous and timeless look that anyone can wear. It’s all about application technique. Haven Salon and Spa has qualified Balayage colorist on staff. Call today for your appointment.

How to Prepare for a Bikini Wax

As opposed to shaving, which chops hair off at the skin line and whose effects last only a day or two, waxing removes hair from the root, which means the smooth results of a professional wax can last up to a month. However, pulling hair out by the root does involve a certain amount of pain. It’s that time of year in the Lehigh Valley and Haven is the full-service salon and spa that can perform all of your waxing needs to get your pool and beach ready.

Most women who wax regularly will tell you that this short-lived pain is definitely worth it for a freedom and low-maintenance bikini line throughout the summer. So if you’ve decided that this is the summer you’ll finally take the plunge, follow these few simple steps to prep for the big event.

Make Sure Your Hair Is Long Enough

Generally, hair should be about one-quarter- inch long to be effectively grabbed by the wax and removed; so make sure to let your hair grow for at least a week before waxing. If your hair is fine or grows slowly, you may need to wait longer. Not to worry, if the hair is too long or unruly, your waxer can easily use clippers to trim the area down.

Get the Area Ready

Use an exfoliating scrub the day before the wax to slough off any dead skin cells. On the day of the wax, don’t apply lotions, creams, oils, or astringents to the bikini area. Moisturizers can prevent the wax from adhering to the hair correctly, and astringents can tighten the pores and increase the amount of pain you experience.

Expect Some Pain and, yes Awkwardness

Discomfort is only felt at the time of service and stops immediately after. If you are concerned about pain, take two Advil before your appointment to reduce inflammation. You may think that ice would be great to numb skin and reduce waxing pain, but applying anything cold to the skin tightens pores. The goal is to have the pores nice and relaxed.

Practice Effective After-Care

You shouldn’t use abrasive scrubs or go tanning for twenty-four to forty-eight hours after the wax. Once the area is no longer tender (in a few days), gently exfoliate in the shower to avoid developing ingrown hairs. Expect to return for your next wax in about a month.

Waxing is a great long-term hair-removal choice; it can work for almost anyone and on any part of the body, from lips to eyebrows to underarms to chests. Even pregnant women can get bikini waxes with no problem, or at least as long as they’re still comfortable.

Waxing is the ultimate no-pain, no-gain beauty treatment. But after that brief, fleeting moment of discomfort is a long stretch of smooth, hairless skin. So go ahead and wax on girl. Call us today to book your appointment: (484) 863-4855
